Abstract: The concepts we use in ethical and bioethical debates have their own history, and it is an illusion to assign them unambiguous meanings that will bind different philosophical positions. The  hermeneutical tradition sensitizes us to the importance of etymological and lexical findings of  key words and terms, which can pave interesting paths for substantive analysis and reflection. In this regard, “life” and “technology” possess interesting tropes in Greek, a somewhat archetypal language of European philosophy. This article discusses the various meanings of life and technology in philosophical discourse, then outlines semantic issues in understanding three Greek words central to the debate: bios, dzoe, and techne. The article also highlights the normative content stemming from these linguistic findings and a rich field for philosophical analyses.

Summary Creation, procreation, or production? Between bios and techne The book explores the profound questions surrounding the origins and end human life and  the transformative impact of modern technology upon human nature. Its contributors engage with complex bioethical issues related to genetic engineering, cloning, and the unsettling prospect of the technological “production” of human beings. At the same time, the volume opens a theological horizon, emphasizing that life cannot be understood merely as the outcome of biological processes, but must also be perceived as the work of God and the fruit of His creative act. The authors reflect upon the boundaries of technological intervention in human existence and the moral implications that inevitably accompany such advances. Drawing upon philosophical, theological, medical, historical, and social perspectives, they offer a multidimensional meditation on the human person and the inherent dignity of human life. Particular attention is devoted to the notions of bios, dzoe, and techne, referring to different meanings of life and technology in Greek philosophy. The authors refer not only to ancient philosophers, but also to modern thinkers. The publication ultimately considers how scientific and technological progress reshapes contemporary understandings of humanity, mortality, and immortality. At its core lies a compelling ethical appeal: that technological development must remain guided by moral responsibility, so that scientific advancement serves the human person rather than undermining human dignity itself.
