Summary The Disease in the Light of Philosophy, Theology, and History of Medicine The monograph addresses the borderline issues of philosophy, theology, and the history of medicine. It was inspired by a conference on these issues held in January 2024. Each of the book's chapters is the work of a different author (one or several), a symposium participant, each bringing a unique perspective to the discussion. Krzysztof Stachewicz presented the mutual dependencies and connections existing between medicine and the philosophy of ancient Greece; Mateusz Szubert discussed the process of medicalization of sin, using homosexuality as an example; Borys Jacek Soiński touched upon the problem of the role of spirituality in the holistic medical care for the patient; Przemysław Strzyżyński debated on the relationship between human memory of an act and moral responsibility for it; Karolina Napiwodzka and Piotr Skalski searched for ethical threads in the scientific and medical work of Albert Schweitzer and Alexis Carrel; Michał K. Owecki characterized the essence of Philippe Pinel's and Jean-Étienne Esquirol's "moral therapy" introduced to psychiatric hospital at the beginning of the 19th century; Anita Magowska explained the role that religious congregations played in caring for the elderly in Poland until 1989, and also described the difficulties that nuns had to struggle with under the partitions and in communist times; Justyna Jaskulska, Katarzyna Plagens-Rotman and Grażyna Jarząbek-Bielecka illustrated ethical dilemmas existing in the professional work of a pediatric gynecological nurse; Anna Żuk indicated the source of the philosophy of Polish pharmacy, pointing at the Polish Code of Ethics for the Pharmaceutical Profession created before World War II. The diversity of the issues discussed is undoubtedly a valuable advantage of the book. It makes the monograph likely to interest theologians, philosophers, pharmacists, nurses, midwives, physicians, historians, students of the professions above, and those interested in the history of medicine, theology, and philosophy
